Participatory Art-Based Approaches with Young People: Learning from Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP)

This workshop will explore the use of participatory art-based approaches with young people using the Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP) project as a case study example alongside offering opportunities for participants to share their knowledge and experience during breakout discussions. Part One will provide an overview of the MAP project and two MAP youth researchers from Rwanda, Eric Ngabonziza and Leonard Nyiringabo, will share examples of their youth-led research projects. Part Two will consist of an experiential workshop led by Leonard and Eric to explore some of the activities that they’ve used as part of the UKRI GCRF Newton Fund project MAP at Home: online psychosocial support through the arts in Rwanda

Also presenting will be Professor Ananda Breed, Principal Investigator of AHRC GCRF Network Plus project Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP) and Co-Investigator of AHRC GCRF Network Plus project Changing the Story.

Workshop Programme

The format of this workshop will be interactive, giving participants the opportunity to learn by experience about the arts-based approaches used within MAP, through their participation in these activities.

9:00 – 9:30 Pastries and Coffee/Tea

9:30 – 10:45 Part One (In ATB1117)

  • Overview of MAP
  • How to use art-based approaches for research? (breakout)
  • How to engage young people in research? (breakout)
  • Examples of youth-led research

10:45 – 11:00 Break (help yourself to pastries/coffee/tea)

11:00 – 12:30 Part Two (In ATB3201)

  • Experiential workshop led by MAP youth researchers. The workshop will focus on active listening and sharing stories and memories.
  • The format of this workshop will be interactive, giving participants the opportunity to learn by experience about the arts-based approaches used within MAP, through their participation in these activities.
